A Journey of Culture, Community and Togetherness
The Bengali Cultural Association (BCA), Panaji, was established in 1981 with a simple yet profound vision—to bring the Bengali community in Goa together through the celebration of Durga Puja, Bengal's most cherished festival. What began as a collective effort to organize the first Durga Puja in Panaji has, over the past 45 years, grown into one of Goa's most respected cultural organizations, dedicated to preserving Bengali heritage while fostering harmony with the rich traditions of Goa.
Since its inception, the Association has served as a vibrant platform for promoting the cultural, literary, and spiritual legacy of Bengal. Through a variety of religious observances, cultural programmes, and community gatherings, BCA has successfully created a space where generations of Bengalis living in Goa can remain connected to their roots while sharing their traditions with the wider Goan community.
Today, the Association's annual calendar extends well beyond its flagship celebration of Durga Puja. BCA also commemorates Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti, Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year), Rabindra Jayanti, Nazrul Jayanti, Kojagiri Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja, and Saraswati Puja, in addition to organizing special cultural programmes that celebrate music, dance, theatre, literature, and the performing arts. These events have become occasions for people from diverse communities to come together, reflecting the spirit of unity in diversity that defines both Bengal and Goa.
The Bengali Cultural Association is proud to be the second Bengali association established in Goa, following the pioneering association in Vasco. Several of BCA's founder members had previously been associated with that organization and envisioned a similar cultural forum for Panaji. The Association was formally registered with the Government of Goa in 1981 and has continued to grow in strength and purpose ever since.
Over the decades, the Durga Puja of Panaji has evolved into much more than a religious festival. With the wholehearted support of the people of Goa and the patronage of leading industrial houses, it has become an integral part of the state's socio-cultural calendar. Every year, devotees, well-wishers, and visitors from diverse backgrounds join the celebrations, making the festival a true symbol of communal harmony, cultural exchange, and mutual respect.
Beyond its cultural and religious activities, the Association has become a close-knit community that nurtures friendships, encourages volunteerism, and strengthens the cultural identity of Bengali families living in and around Panaji. As new generations become part of this journey, BCA continues to welcome individuals and families who share its commitment to preserving heritage, celebrating diversity, and contributing to the vibrant social fabric of Goa.
The Bengali Cultural Association gratefully acknowledges the unwavering encouragement and generous support of the House of Dempo, whose association with BCA has remained steadfast since its very beginning. This enduring relationship spans three generations—from Padma Shri Late Shri Vasantrao S. Dempo, to Late Shri Vasudeva V. Dempo, and now Shri Shrinivas V. Dempo, Chairman of the Dempo Group of Companies—each of whom has served as the Association's Chief Patron. Their continued patronage has been instrumental in the Association's growth and has helped transform its vision into a lasting legacy.
As we celebrate 45 years of our journey, we look back with gratitude at the dedication of our founders, the commitment of our members, the generosity of our patrons, and the affection of the people of Goa. Inspired by this legacy, we look forward to the future with renewed enthusiasm, continuing our mission of preserving Bengali culture, promoting artistic excellence, strengthening community bonds, and building enduring bridges between the cultural traditions of Bengal and Goa.
"Rooted in Tradition, United in Community, Inspired for the Future."
